Division Vocabulary Review
Division • Quotient – the answer to a division problem. • Dividend – the number being divided. • Divisor – the number doing the dividing.
Compatible Numbers • Numbers that are easy to compute mentally. • Example of using compatible numbers in division: 310 ÷ 8 Adjust 310 to 320 because 32 ÷ 8 = 4. 320 ÷ 8 = 40. Use basic math facts to help you make good estimates.
Remainder • The part that is left over after completing a division problem. • The remainder should NEVER be the same or larger than the divisor!
Divisible • A number is divisible by another number if when it is divided there is no remainder. Examples: • 35 ÷ 7 = 5. 35 is divisible by 7 because there is no remainder. • 24 ÷ 8 = 3. 24 is divisible by 8 because there is no remainder.
Mean • Mean – A fancy word for the average. The average of a set of data is found by adding all the numbers together and dividing by the total of numbers in the data. • Example: 3, 5, 3, 5, 4 – these numbers added together equal 20. The next step is to count the numbers in the data. There are 5 numbers. Then divide – 20 ÷ 5 = 4. The mean (average) is 4!
