As a scientist… I believethatapplyingscientificevidence and best practice ateverylevel of the HIV responseis the onlyway to tackle the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Basic science and clinicalresearchhas generated & continue to generate important tools & knowledgeabout HIV to improvetreatment, care and prevention. It isunacceptablethat the results of science are not implemented & made available for the benefit of all people
As a President of IAS and a Nobel laureate I have a voice & the responsability for continoulyadvocating for the right to an evidence-basedresponse to HIV (women & children, keyaffected populations…) We must advocate for a betterlinkbetweenresearch & public health intervention It isalsomy vision thatwe must reinforcedialog & cooperationwithhealthprofessionals & decisionmakersfightingotherdiseases (including in research) Rememberthatwe are alwaysstrongertogether!
6 priorities To connect, to promote, to mobilize, to advocate… Social & Political Sciences Effectiveness & Efficiency HumanRights TASP KAPs HIV Cure CONFERENCES A powerfulmean but not an end!
As a Woman…. women represent 49% of all adults living with HIV. HIV remains the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age worldwide. Toolittleresearchthat has been pursued to addressspecific questions related to HIV infection in women or to systematicallyinvestigatesexdifferences. IAS has with 15 otherpartnerslaunch in 2010 a consensus statementaimingatadvancing an HIV research agenda for women and children. This document describes 20 priorityresearch questions to address the knowledge gap in this area.
Wewill continue to Advocate for a genderbasedapproach in HIV research IAS has also introduced in 2011 a gender policy to abstract submission to conferences & the journal of IAS to encourage authors to provide research results disaggregated by sex and to provide gender analysis.
