  3. Definition • Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system • In Parkinson's disease, there is a degeneration in parts of the basal ganglia. This causes a lack of dopamine. Therefore, the basal ganglia are prevented from regulating the nerve pathways that control normal muscle movement. • Parkinson’s causes muscles to be overly tense, which causes tremors, joint rigidity, and slow movement.

  4. Neurological Problem • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFcmuRgOWQU

  5. SubstantiaNigra • Parkinson’s is caused by diminishing SubstantiaNigracells cells that contain Dopamine and that are located in the Midbrain • The nerve cells in the SubstantiaNigra send out signals that control the release of neurotransmitters essential to movement coordination

  6. Symptoms • Muscle rigidity • Tremors • Changes in speech • Slowness of movement • Decreased facial movement • Unsteady balance • Swallowing problems

  7. L- Dopa (Levadopa) • L-Dopa is converted to Dopamine in the brain to substitute for the diminished SubstantiaNigra (dopmaine-containing) cells • It is currently the best remedy we have in alleviating Parkinson’s • It mostly effects the rigidity and slowness of patients • In a majority of patients, it makes life significantly easier and more enjoyable

  8. Future of Parkinson’s • Parkinson’s causes are currently unknown. However, genetics, aging, and toxins are being researched. Today, there is no cure for Parkinson's and herbal remedies are unproven. • People are currently experimenting with stem cells as a possible cure for Parkinson’s.
