Summary • Overview • Journal Impact and Ranking • Individual Impact • Questions
Why do I need to know this? • Funding Agencies • Promotion and Tenure Committees • Journal Purchasing • Awards
Journal Rankings • 3 tools/measurements to use • Impact Factor (Thomson Scientific/ISI) • Eigenfactor (Eigenfactor.org) • Scimago Journal Rank (Scimago)
Journal Ranking Journal Impact Factor • Created by Thomson Scientific (ISI) • Reported in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) • Determined using Web of Science , or • Science Citation Index/Social Sciences Citation Index Times cited in 2008 (to items published in 2006-2007) JIF = Number of ‘citable items’ published in 2006-07* *Citable items are research articles, review articles and proceedings articles
Impact Factor • Advantages: • Simple • Recognized • Has Longevity • Disadvantages: • Can be artificially inflated • All citations count the same • Problems with ISI data
Journal Ranking • Eigenfactor • Created by Carl Bergstrom, Univ. Washington • Freely available at Eigenfactor.org • Uses network analysis to determine significant journals
Journal Rankings • Scimago Journal Ranking (SJR) • Created by Scimago Research Group (Spain) • Uses data from Scopus citation database • Like the Impact Factor, but weights citations • Scimago Journal & Country Rank
Individual Impact • h-index • Created in 2005 by J.E. Hirsch • Very simple, clear • Shows both productivity and quality h index = h articles which have been cited at least h times
Individual Impact • Caveats: • Not cross-disciplinary • Does not account for highly cited items • Changes over time Median for the biosciences = 147 Median for physics = 75
Individual Impact • Web of Science • Automatic or manual • Google Scholar • Usable, but beware!
