Learning VOCABULARY takes Time • Learning new words is done by a step by step process. • The more exposure the better the understanding of the word will be. • Vocabulary must be used actively in different contexts. • Knowledge of vocabulary can shift from no knowledge to absolute understanding. • Students will have different levels of understanding and it will grow with more engagement with the vocabulary.
WORDS WITH MULTIPLE MEANINGS • Also, known as Polysemous. • The words meaning must be clarified in the text that it is representing. • Example: Scale vs. Scale= Weighing scale vs. fish scale
AFFIXES & ROOT WORDS • “Affixes and root words need to be taught.” • 60% of the words students encounter having meaningful roots and affixes. • Highest achievement of learning root words is through Direct Instruction.
WORDS & RELATIONSHIPS • Associate a word with other words and ideas. • The relationship among words is the heart of effective content area teaching. • The relationship among words is critical to building vocabulary. • Word+ relationship with another word= conceptual understanding.
Go BEYOND THE DEFINITION • Copying definitions is the pitfall of learning vocabulary. • Make sure that students interpretations make sense. • Relate vocabulary to background knowledge.
EFFECTIVE VOCABULARY PROGRAM: P.E.A.R • Preparation • Words that will be taught will be selected. • Must be the most critical to understanding the concepts. • The amount of words chosen should be limited.
