Objectives: • Read and write whole numbers in figures and words and know the value of each digit. • Use known number facts and place value to help with, and speed up, mental addition/subtraction. • Add and subtract whole numbers in columns. Vocabulary: sum less than digit more than difference place value

  3. If I write the digit 2 in the units column you know that it means two units. Tens Units 2 If I write the digit 2 in the tens column you know that it means 20. Tens Units 2 0 We call this its place value.

  4. The headings for whole number place value columns are: tens units hundred thousands thousands ten thousands hundreds

  5. As a digit moves to the next column on the left it gets 10 times bigger. thousands hundreds tens units 6 This is the number 6

  6. As a digit moves to the next column on the left it gets 10 times bigger. thousands hundreds tens units 6 0 This is the number 60

  7. As a digit moves to the next column on the left it gets 10 times bigger. thousands hundreds tens units 6 0 0 This is the number 600

  8. As a digit moves to the next column on the left it gets 10 times bigger. thousands hundreds tens units 6 0 0 0 This is the number 6000
