Il-Presepju Malti fi Brussell A Maltese Christmas Crib in Brussels
A Christmas Crib from Malta“Ninni la tibkix izjed, ninni Gesu Bambin....”These are the opening words of a traditional Maltese Christmas Carol. It is a little lullaby, cradling Baby Jesus to stop crying and go to sleep. Christmas is a big family tradition in Malta and the Christmas Crib can be found alongside the Christmas tree in virtually every Maltese household. The Christmas Crib has been part of the Maltese culture since time immemorial, and is a tradition which is enthusiastically sustained by young and old, boys and girls. The Crib presented here is a typical Maltese Christmas Crib and is made of papier mache. The statuettes, which are the work of a Maltese master artisan are hand made in clay and date back to the early 1960’s. Mr Charles Bellia, who is also the Secretary of the Maltese “Friends of the Crib Association”, built this Crib specifically for the Cathedral of S.S. Michael & Gudule in Brussels, with the hope that it will help to spread everlasting Joy and Peace.
