  3. Title III Action Plan • District not meeting AMAO Targets • Written plan for English learner achievement • Evaluation and recommendations made by Los Angeles County Office of Education: Addressing rigor and language proficiency levels

  4. What is rigor? • “Rigor is focused, coherent and appropriately challenging lessons and curriculum” (William Schmidt, Professor at Michigan State). • “Giving students curriculum that will prepare them to succeed in college or the world of work” (Jerry D. Weast, Superintendent).

  5. Language Proficiency Level • Committee addressed grammatical forms and vocabulary for existing lessons • Instructional Level + 1 • New Early Advanced/Advanced lessons were created for our Intermediate students

  6. Highlights of Summer Work • Matching of Priority ELA Standards and ELD Standards (2011) • Reviewed Current Lessons and Identified Priority ELD Standards(2011) • Supplemented Reading and Writing Lessons for the first 15 units using Avenues, based on CELDT/CST Results (2011) • Added Writing Prompts with Rubrics to 2nd/3rd Trimester (2011)

ELD Essential Agreements • Revised Pacing • Assessments Identified • ADEPT - K-2 all, 3-5 Beginners - Early Int. • Newcomers & New to District • Avenues (2nd grade only who have passed ADEPT Early Adv; Pre/Post) • Gap Finder 3-5 - End of the School Year • K-5 Writing Prompts - 2nd & 3rd Trimesters • With Avenues Writing Rubrics Included

ADEPT and GAP Finder • ADEPT testing administered starting at the level where the student did not meet benchmark (test only items missed) • ADEPT scores are recorded in OARS • If student passes ADEPT, administer the GAP Finder to be used as a formative assessment for instruction (3rd grade and above)

  11. ELD Progress Reports • Progress reports are accessed through OARS • Informs parents of progress that their child is making toward proficiency in English
