Purpose of experiment • The purpose of our experiment today is to better understand how sound is effected when it hits different materials. • This experiment is intended to build off of our prior knowledge or reflection and absorption and apply in further into practical use. • As the experiment goes on, think to yourself, “what roles do absorption and reflection play?”
Materials needed • Check on your desks to make sure you have the following material; • Tin foil • Two foam boards • Three wood boards • One box • Speaker attached to a computer ready to blast some Bieber
Introduction • You have been asked to be a part of the greatest tour in America, the Justin Bieber Experience. • Your role on the tour is to be a part of the stadium design crew. • It is your duty to design a stadium that is ideal for Justin’s voice to reach all of the crowd clearly without being to loud or soft. • You have been given three materials,(wood, metal, and foam), to which to work with.
Introduction • In your group you will be asked to investigate, on a small scale model, which material reflects and absorbs the most and least amount of sound. Record your observation in your lab report sheet. • Have fun and do your best. Justin is counting on you!
Step 1 • Predict what items you believe will be the best source for reflection? Absorption? (Tin Foil- Foam-Wood)
Step 2 • Place each item in the box individually and play the song. Record your observations for each object below; -Tin Foil -Foam -Wood
Step 3 • Infer why there were differences between the strength of the echoes when using the different materials?
Analyze and Conclude • 1. How did the sound of the music change as you placed the different items in the box?
Analyze and conclude • 2. Infer what was happening to the sound as each item was placed in the box.
