A SecretWorth Sharing Philippians 4:11-13 Part 1 Learning Contentment
Contentment: What? • Paul learned the secret of contentment • “Secret” (Gr. mueo), used only here, means lit. to shut the eyes and ears; then, to instruct or initiate one into a mystery
Contentment: What? • Paul learned the secret of contentment • Contentment (Gr. autarkeia) means “sufficient, adequate, needing no assistance or aid” • Contentment is being independent of external circumstances • Paul learned that he could face any external circumstance in life because it did not change his internal relationship with Jesus Christ
Contentment: Where? • Paul learned the secret of contentment in whatever state • I will pass through different stages of life wherein I must be content (Eccl. 3:1-8) • “I know how to be abased” – where things are going badly (2 Cor. 6:10; 11:7-10, 23-28; 12:7; Phil. 1:12-14; 3:8; 2 Tim. 4:16-18) • “I know how to abound” – where things are going well (Gal. 1:23-24)
Contentment: When? • Paul learned the secret of contentment • “Learned” is not something you are born with; not book knowledge; not purchased; but to learn by use and practice (daily experiences) • Paul’s experiences, both good and bad, coupled with his proper faith taught him contentment
Contentment: How? • I will be content when I realize that nothing earthly lasts or satisfies (2 Cor. 4:16-18; Heb. 10:34) • I will be content when I realize that nothing earthly will separate me from God (Rom. 8:38-39) • I will be content when I trust God to take care of me at all times (Deut. 31:6-8; Psa. 37:23-26; Mt. 6:11, 25-34; 1 Cor. 10:13)
Contentment: How? • I will be content when I am in a right relationship with God and Jesus Christ (Prov. 19:23; Mt. 5:6; Phil. 4:13) • I will be content when I truly trust in the promises of God (Mt. 11:28; Jn. 10:28-29; Acts 27:25; 2 Tim. 1:12; Heb. 7:25; 2 Pet. 1:4)
