Who is Responsible? • Don’t depend on the “experts” • When doctors treat children they make parents sign waivers consenting to treatment and assuming responsibility • So, parents are ultimately responsible for their children’s health You Are!
Our Three Areas of Concern • Basic nutrition for health and fitness • How to protect kids from from infectious diseases • Ideas for promoting general physical, mental and emotional wellbeing
Nutrition in America • A typical American only consumes 1-1/2 servings of vegetables and no fruit on an average day • America is the fattest nation on the planet • Americans spend 90% of their money on processed foods
Children and Weight • The percentage of overweight children has more than doubled since 1980 • The percentage of overweight adolescents has more than tripled since 1980 • Overweight young people are more likely to become overweight or obese adults
Nutrition AffectsMental and Emotional Health • Juvenile delinquents are usually hypoglycemic • Putting them on good diet kept them out of trouble with the law • Good nutrition makes children calmer and more co-operative, which makes parenting easier
Refined Sugar Contributes to: • Obesity • Tooth decay and loss of bone density • Reduced immune response (catching colds and flu more easily) • Hyperactivity, attention deficient disorder and increased behavioral problems • Nervous disorders, irritability, lethargy, nervousness • Yeast infections
Taming the Candy Monster • Don’t keep refined sugar and other refined carbohydrates in the house • Provide adequate protein and dietary fats (this kills sugar cravings) • Provide natural treats and use sugar alternatives
Healthy Sugar Substitutes • Fresh fruits • Xylitol • Stevia • Agave nectar • Freeze-dried sugar cane juice • Raw, unfiltered honey • Real maple syrup (grade B or C)

Breakfast is Important • Kids who eat a breakfast with good fats and proteins perform better in school than kids who start the day with high carbohydrate breakfast cereals • Adding fat (butter, cream, flax seed oil) to whole grain breakfast cereals helps to balance blood sugar
Smoothies • Smoothies are a great way to get a quick breakfast for your kids • Frozen or fresh fruits • Love and Peas Protein Powder • For good fats add coconut milk, whole milk yoghurt or whole milk

Germ Phobia • Our culture has become germ phobic because of the belief that germs alone are the cause of disease • The body’s immune system has to be exposed to germs to learn how to fight infection • Over sterilization of the home increases risk of asthma and allergies
Antibiotics • Are overused • Are ineffective against viral infections (cold and flu), most earaches and most respiratory problems • Cause overgrowth of yeast which weakens the immune system • Should be reserved for serious bacterial infections
Surface Immunity • The Activia commercials are right – 70% of your immunity is in your intestines • Probiotics (friendly bacteria) are vital to a healthy immune system • Probiotics occur naturally in cultured foods like yogurt, kiefer and natural pickles
