  2. We would like to invite you to attend the 2019 Spring APIC Indiana Conference on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the IMMI Conference Center in Westfield, IN. The usual registration fee applies for Friday’s conference (please see registration form). APIC IN has also partnered with Moore Restoration & Advanced Services, Inc., and the Indiana State Department of Health to present a FREE Pre-Conference on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at the same location. Please pre-register for the any time(s) that you will attend. Pre-Conference Speakers Anne Edwards, NR Paramedic,is the Director of Intelligence and Emergency Operations at MESH Coalition, and was named the Paramedic of the Year in 2011 by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, the MESH coalition is a non-profit, public-private partnership that coordinates, supports, and strengthens healthcare and related entities to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the effects of emergency and crisis events and incidents. MESH provides: preparedness and planning services, innovative education, training and exercise programs, healthcare intelligence services, and regulatory and policy analysis in support of comprehensive healthcare sector emergency management. Rachel Cathey, MPH, received her Bachelor or Arts in Medical Sociology and Master of Public Health in Health Administration and Policy from the University of Louisville. Rachel has served as the Healthcare-Associated Infections Epidemiologist at the Indiana State Department of Health since 2017. Rachel also serves as a member of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists' Data Analysis and Presentation Standardization group. Previously, Rachel served as a public health investigator concentrating on vaccine-preventable diseases and has done extensive research on pneumococcal disease vaccines. Eric Hawkins, Deputy State Epidemiologist, ISDH,has been with the Indiana State Department of Health for approximately two years. He started at the ISDH as the Director of Tuberculosis and Refugee Health and, within the past year, has moved to the Epidemiology Resource Center (ERC), becoming the Deputy State Epidemiologist/Director of the ERC. Eric came to the ISDH from Arizona where he worked for over seven years in local and state public health. His public health experience in Arizona included environmental health and infectious diseases.

  5. Conference Speakers Mary Angela Cole, MSN, BSN, RN, CJCP, CIC, has been a registered nurse for over 32 years, with professional nursing experience in orthopedics, emergency care, cardiac catheterization, and infection prevention and control. She received her nursing diploma from the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta, GA, her BSN from Excelsior College in Albany, NY, and her MSN from Grand Canyon University out of Phoenix, AZ. Mary’s experience, acquired from numerous clinical settings, provides the framework for her approach to utilizing standardization and evidence-based practices in the health care environment. She has worked in Infection Prevention and Control for greater than 15 years, most recently as the Director of Infection Prevention and Control at a large academic trauma center in Atlanta, Georgia. During this time, Ms. Cole was instrumental in developing a Tier 1 Ebola Care Unit at Grady Health System. She has actively participated in numerous successful Joint Commission surveys and is is a Certified Joint Commission Professional (CJCP), as well as certified in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC). Mary has experience in leadership, education, and performance improvement, which has led to significant decreases in infections. She has produced multiple publications and received awards related to infection prevention and control. She has also conducted hospital assessments and developed educational programs responsive to the needs of the community, geographic region and country. Sharon Ann Van Wicklin, PhD(c), MSN, RN, CNOR, CRNFA(E), CPSN-R, PLNC, FAAN, ISPAN-F,has more than 44 years of experience as a perioperative RN. She has worked in all facets of the perioperative environment, from scrub to director. Sharon received her BSN and MSN from Middle Tennessee State University and is currently a PhD in Nursing candidate from Missouri State University (PhD[c]). She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing and Phi Kappa Phi. Sharon has earned certification in operating room nursing (CNOR), as an emeritus RN first assistant (CRNFA[E]), as a retired plastic and reconstructive surgical nurse (CPSN-R), and as a legal nurse consultant (PLNC). In 2005, Sharon was recognized by AORN as a recipient of the Outstanding Achievement in the Application of Perioperative Clinical Research Award. This award recognizes a perioperative RN whose application of perioperative clinical research reflects the goal of excellence in patient care. Sharon has also been honored by induction as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) and in the International Society of Plastic and Aesthetic Nurses (ISPAN-F).

Conference Speakers Sharon Ann Van Wicklin, PhD(c), MSN, RN, CNOR, CRNFA(E), CPSN-R, PLNC, FAAN, ISPAN-F,(continued) In a previous position as a perioperative educator, Sharon was responsible for the creation and coordination of educational projects and programs designed to improve hospital processes for orientation and ongoing educational development of personnel in nine perioperative departments, including the sterile processing and endoscopy departments. As a Senior Perioperative Practice Specialist for the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), Sharon provided consultative services, authored AORN publications including the AORN guidelines and Clinical Issues columns, and represented AORN with other processional and regulatory organizations. She was also a member of the nursing faculty at Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Phoenix. In her current position as a perioperative consultant, Sharon serves as a clinical consultant, peer reviewer, clinical editor, author, and presenter for a variety of perioperative educational products, presentations, and publications. Her work as a legal expert witness involves reading and reviewing medical records and testifying as to the standard of perioperative nursing care. Jennifer K. Spivey, MSN, RN, CNOR, CIC, FAPICis an independent Infection Prevention Consultant and recent IP System Consultant in Performance Excellence and Quality Operations for St. Vincent Health’s 19 ministries. She is a past president and two-term Board of Director of APIC Indiana 076 statewide chapter. Jennifer lead her APIC IN chapter in winning the 2017 Large Chapter APIC Chapter Excellence Award for Synergistic Alliances. Jennifer currently holds three contracts as an IP consultant: IP for Indiana State Department of Health, IP for LaRue Carter Memorial Health, and SME for University of Indianapolis, Long-term Care IP Educational ISDH funded grant. Jennifer is board-certified in perioperative nursing for over 30 years and has 18 years of experience in infection prevention and control. In 2016, she was awarded APIC’s highest honor of Fellow of APIC (FAPIC). Jennifer is a proficient national speaker and has presented at APIC National Conferences four times between 2011 and 2018, in 2016, at ASPAN National conference, and in 2012 at the National Teaching Institute for ACCN.

  7. Conference Speakers Sandra (Sandy) L. Benson, BSN, RN, CIC, has worked in various roles as a registered nurse over the last 40 years. She was recruited by the St. Vincent Director of Quality fifteen years ago and introduced to the world of Infection Prevention. Sandy has benefitted from mentorship and coaching from a number of individuals, honing her skills and increasing her knowledge in the field of Infection Prevention. She currently works in the Hendricks Regional Health System and is the Infection Preventionist supporting inpatient and ambulatory settings. She has published an article in a peer-reviewed journal about basic principles for the bedside nurse. Sandy has had a number of public speaking engagements around different infection prevention topics, including WTHR Channel 13 noon feature and Hendricks Regional Health Pod Casts. She has also collaborated with a number of local groups providing Infection Prevention education to health professionals and members of local communities. Sandy was the 2018 APIC Indiana Mentorship Award winner, having been nominated by APIC members from three different health systems. Having benefitted from mentoring relationships and with experience mentoring others, she is excited to share how such a relationship may develop with just a simple conversation. Robyn Matthews, MPH, serves as a public health informatician at the Indiana State Department of Health’s Epidemiology Resource Center (ERC). In this role, she works with epidemiologists, the informatics team, and IT, on projects related to Indiana’s NEDSS Base System (NBS) and electronic lab reporting. Prior to this role, she worked as a research epidemiologist at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA where she focused on health issues of military personnel after combat. She also served as the CDC/CSTE Applied Public Health Informatics Fellow for the County of San Diego where she leveraged the county’s syndromic surveillance system and the local health informatics exchange, San Diego Health Connect, to enhance public health response.
