  2. Chanchala’s Motivation Strongly believes education is the primary agent for socio-economic changes. Basic desire to solve public problems with private initiative and resources. The Organization Estd in 1994 in Jharkhand by Chanchala Mishra, a philanthropist with 22 yrs of association with tribals Emphasis placed in 3 key areas: Basic education Learn-and-earn vocational training Health and hygiene promotion Matrichaya - At a Glance Goals • Raise literacy levels esp, among women and children • Prevent child labor and bondage labor. • Promote good hygiene and provide routine healthcare • Encourage self-employment through micro-credit programs • Propagate environmental awareness and promote pollution control methods. • Encourage tobacco control and alcohol detoxification by organizing seminars and street plays.

  4. Asha Support • 25 new students from very poor Santhal tribes selected for classes for session Apr 1, 2006-Mar 31, 2007). • Focus on basic education, hygiene and inculcating school-going habit. • Thereafter syllabus of nursery standard will be followed.

  5. Gautam’s visit • Visited on August 2, 2006. • Focus Areas - Health -60% • Education – 30% • Others – 10% (Learn & Earn Self Help Group)

  6. Gautam’s Site Visit • 5 classrooms, supported by Asha-AZ, AshaCornell, Rotary Club and Matrichaya’s other funds. • Extra classroom added to accommodate the students who graduated from last year to higher levels. • Two rooms allocated for vocational training for adults – zariwork and beautician course where adults were learning.

  7. Gautam’s Site Visit The students were all very energetic and eager to learn, as like last year. • There were more girls than boys but seemed some more boys now (on a quick visual scan during the prayer). • There are two new teachers also.

  8. Gautam’s Observations • What I liked best was formal tracking by school management/teachers of the academic performance of each student. • This is quantifiable as the marks are tracked from the time each student gave entrance exam to each time they give any test. • The results show marked improvement in each case.

  9. Gautam’s Observations • This is an excellently-run project and fulfills the goal of Asha for Education. • The school organizers have followed various advise I gave last year. One of those was to start a homeopathic medicine facility for low cost and timely treatment of the kids which Dr. Pandey described as very successful. • The school has been able to pull in additional funding as they keep growing.
