  1. Guns of the MilitaryBy Ben and Adam There has been many different types of weapons held in the hands of the U. S. Infantry.

  2. History of Rifles • Kentucky Rifles were invented in 1732. They used old black powder and had to be reloaded after each shot • The Magazine Rifle was invented in 1890. This rifle could shoot farther, used metal cartridges, and reloaded faster. • The Fully Automatic Rifle was invented in 1939. It used powder that doesn’t smoke in copper cartridges that reload faster.

  3. Looks of Rifles • Rifles have grooves in their barrels called rifling that makes the bullet spin and the shot more accurate • There are two ways to aim with a rifle, sight or scope • Rifles have extended barrels and gun housing

  4. History of Machine Guns • Dr. Gatling invented the Gatling Gun in 1862 used to take down more men faster and more efficiently • Hirum Maxim made a fully automatic gun in 1884 that had 650 RPM • Colt’s idea sparked the idea for new machine guns

  5. Looks of Machine Guns • Gas fed systems work from gas left from the shell after the gun was fired. The M-16 is an example of the gas fed system. • Recoil system powers the gun from the recoil pushing on the bolt. Most earlier machine guns used the recoil system. • Blowback system works just like the recoil system except the gun housing moves instead of the bolt. The Tommy gun uses the Blowback system.

  6. M-16 A2 • The M-16 can be a semi-automatic or fully automatic gun • Since the M-16 is made from aluminum alloy, the gun only weighs 10-15 lbs. • Its bullet goes tip-over-end instead of spinning like the regular rifle

  7. What We Learned • The guns in the hands of our Infantry, whether it is a machine gun or rifle, can make or break a battle.
