  2. Why do we need the “Passé Composé”? • We need to tell what happened in the past. • We need to express what someone did in the past. Exemple: Nous avonsperdule match.

How do we form the Passé Composé? • There must be two verbs • - a helping verb (the present tense of avoir_ ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont -- the main verb in the past participle form Exemple s: Ma soeuraétudié. My sister studied. :Tu as finiton interro. You finished your quiz. Il a attendudevant la classe. He waited in front of the class.

  4. Verb #2—Main Verb in the Past Participle • Use the past participle only after you have written a form of avoir in the present tense • Subject + avoir + past participle = passé composé

  5. Past participle of Regular –er verbs • For regular –er verbs, drop the ending, then add an accented “é”: Exemple: jouer jou + é = joué Bruno ajouéau foot hier.

  6. Past participle of Regular –ir verbs • For regular –ir verbs, drop the ending, then add an “i”. Exemple: maigrirmaigr + i = maigri + M. Delonamaigri. - M. Delonn’apas maigri.

  7. Past participle of Regular –re verbs • For regular –re verbs, drop the ending, then add an “u”. Exemple: rendrerend + u = rendu + Laïlaarenduseslivresà la bibliothèque. - Les profs n’ont pas renduleurslivres.

  10. Verbs with helping verb être (p. 35) Certain verbs must only use “être” with the past participle. All verbs which use “être” must show agreement with the subject of that verb.
