  2. Why reading is important? • Benefits of reading. • Who should read with your children? • How to help your child reading at home • What to read, when and how? • Reading Comprehension and personal connections. • Oxford Reading Tree • Reading resources • Questions????

  3. Encourage your child to read a book everyday in English and Arabic. • It develops their vocabulary, spelling and understanding. • A stronger relationship with you. • Academic excellence. • Basic speech skills. • The basics of how to read a book. • Better communication skills. • Mastery of language. • More logical thinking skills. • Acclamation to new experiences. • Enhanced concentration and discipline. • The knowledge that reading is fun!

  4. Paired Reading • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q30BdJm3Eeg&feature=related

  5. Gentle is the key • Work for short periods and build them up everyday. • Beginners need to have letter sounds and decoding skills built as well as vocabulary • Ask your children questions about what they are reading and how it connects with them “Biff did not like the haircut. Do you think that you would be scared to have your haircut? Why or why not?”

  6. Rather than give words away for your child, help them sound out the words • Ask what the vocabulary means as you come across it. What does this word mean? How do you think we could find out? • Make reading fun! • If the child becomes frustrated, take a break and come back to the reading. • Praise your child and ask about what they have learned.

  7. Every opportunity you are with your child is an opportunity to read something. • Read at home away from distractions such as TV and video games • Read store signs and labels • Read menus and special boards. • Literally any place that you can, but in a relaxed and fun manner. • Everyday read something with and to your child.

  8. Short formal times are wonderful to provide instruction but must be balanced with fun • Do not push your child so hard that they do not want to read, but also do not be so relaxed that they would just watch TV – the key is balance. • Bedtime stories are amazing – have your little one help you read the story. • Have “power out nights” where the family can get together and pretend that there is no power in the house and they can read by candles and share stories with each other.

  9. Connect your own personal stories with what the child is reading “I was so scared of snakes when I was a child. Let’s go see some snakes in the zoo, on the computer… etc” • Inquire with your child and ask questions. Ask comprehension questions and feeling questions. “What happened to the boy?”… how do you think that made him feel? Have you ever felt like that? • Bring the subject to life so that the characters or ideas in the book seem close to them, personal to them and relatable to them.

  10. It is a comprehensive reading program. • It has 9 stages. Grade 1 is following stage 1and 2 at the moment. • Use the vocabulary words at the back of the book to help your child with the language of the book – check before and after. • It is okay to read the book several times. It is better for the child to have fun and know that books at their own pace than to rush and try and finish the set.

  11. Books • Stories • Oxford Reading Tree Books. • Searching for words in a dictionary. Links to help out. • www.starfall.com • YouTube • www.jollyphonics.com • http://www.magickeys.com/books/
