Introduction • Christopher was born in the year of 1451 in Genoa, Italy. Christopher started learning sailing at a young age. • This was started by going on short fishing trips, then escalating into longer and more extensive trips with merchants. • He made a total of four trips to the Caribbean and South America during the years 1492-1504. Caribbean Studies
First Voyage • His intention was to travel westward across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a shorter route to Asia. • He had a theory that the world was 25% smaller and round, and it composes of mostly land. Caribbean Studies

Second Voyage • The second voyage took place on September 24, 1493 and was more extensive. • His aim was to find gold and to conquer the Taíno tribe and colonise the region. • Columbus established a base in Hispaniola and sailed around Hispaniola and along the length of southern Cuba. • He spotted and named the island of Dominica on November 3, 1493. Third Voyage • On a third expedition May 30,1498 Columbus sailed farther south, to Trinidad and Venezuela. • Columbus was the first European since the Viking Leif Ericsson to set foot on the mainland of America. Caribbean Studies
Fourth Voyage • On May 11, 1502, Christopher Columbus set out on his fourth and final voyage to the New World. • his mission was to explore uncharted areas to the west of the Caribbean, hopefully finding a passage west to the Orient. Caribbean Studies
