I Know why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou • She was born on April 4th, 1928 in St. Louis Missouri. • She was raised in St. Louis Missouri, and Stamps, Arkansas • In Stamps, she experienced the racial discrimination present in the South, but she also absorbed faith and the values of African American family, community, and culture. • As a teenager, she won a scholarship to study dance. At 14, she dropped out to become San Francisco’s first African American female cable car conductor. She drama at San Francisco’s Labor School. • did eventually graduate high school and gave birth to her son, Guy, a few weeks after graduation. • She lived in Europe, Egypt, and Ghana, and has mastered French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, and the West African Language, Fanti. • She worked with both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. • She has published more than 30 bestselling books of poetry, non-fiction, and fiction. • She has served on 2 presidential committees, received the Presidential Medal of the Arts, the Lincoln Medal, and has received 3 Grammy Awards. • She has received over 50 honorary college degrees and currently is a professor of American studies at Wake Forest University.
