Homosexuality A "homosexual" is a woman or man who has a sexual and/or romantic interest in a person of the same gender. The work "lesbian" refers to women and the word "gay" refers to men.
Are homosexuals discriminated against? In the U.S., some organizations and individuals discriminate against homosexuals. For example, school teachers can lose their jobs if someone thinks they are homosexual. Homosexuals can be refused housing or be evicted from their homes. In addition, they are sometimes physically attacked. Unfortunately, homophobia and discrimination against homosexuals exist everywhere in the U.S., including in San Francisco and at San Francisco State University.
Conflict Theorists Explain Problems Associated with Sexual Orientation: Conflict theorists believe that the group in power imposes its own attitudes, beliefs, and values about sexual orientation on everyone else; thus, the beliefs of dominant group members in the federal and state governments, the military and other social institutions. According to conflict theorists, social change can occur only if people demand that laws be changed to bring about greater equality for gay men and lesbians.
