Personalising learning….what’s it all about? CEOM Northern Region 19/2/2010 Facilitated by Deb Vietri
Aim of today • To broaden and clarify our understandings of personalising learning • To explore articles and research nationally and internationally • To use the ‘9 gateways’ as a framework to explore ways of personalising learning • To explore and begin to frame up an area of personalising learning you wish to develop at your school
What do we know about personalising learning • It is the current ‘buzz’ term- bingo • It’s got something to do with meeting the needs of each individual student • It is complex
Definition from an expert source • Personalised Learning is the tailoring of pedagogy, curriculum and learning support to meet the needs and aspirations of individual learners. • ‘One child at a time’.

‘We cannot specify- and should not seek - a formal definition of devising, organising and implementing ways of personalisation before we embark on the journeys of these innovation networks (the 9 gateways). We shall discover what personalisation is during the journey itself.’ David Hargreaves
So let the journey begin • What does personalising learning mean to you? • What are the elements? • How would you describe it? • In your schol groups create a concept map to show your ideas. (One colour)
What are the forces driving this initiative? • Shift Happens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljbI-363A2Q
Readings • Expert groups • Select a reading and move to an expert group. Each expert group should have 5-7 members • Read and discuss your article. • You can use the questions as prompts • Record the key points your group raise (all members must record).
Readings • Expert groups to number off from 1-6 • Formulate home groups. • In home groups share your insights from your reading. 5 mins max per article.
Readings • In school groups add to your concept map in a second colour. • Identify where these ideas are represented in your school’s vision and learning and teaching statements. • Which aspects are strong? • Which aspects are omitted? • Are they important?
9 Gateways • In 2004 in the UK the Specialist schools and academy trust, in partnership with Prof David Hargreaves, undertook a journey with English schools to explore what was meant by personalising learning and what it looked like in practice.
9 Gateways • A productive look at personalisation from the different, but complementary, perspectives afforded by a series of gateways.
Why these 9? • Each is applicable to every school and classroom • Each is already a part of current professional practice • Each requires strong leadership if progress is to be made • Each is potentially a way of enhancing student motivation and commitment to learning
Entry to personalised learning can be made through any gateway. • Starting from one gateway soon leads to one or more of the others. • Important to recognise the interconnectedness of the gateway as there is a danger of generating separate silos of innovation.
School reflections • Reflect on your concept map and add in a third colour if appropriate. • How has your thinking developed since this morning? • Consider what you are already doing in the different gateways.
Dreaming- visioning • What would you like your school to be?
Focusing the vision • Select one or two areas you think you might like to work on. • Complete the PMI of what you think is currently happening at your school.
Focusing the vision • Intended curriculum • Enacted curriculum • Learned curriculum • What do you need to find out/collect evidence about? • Complete last column.
The next steps • Between session task- to collect evidence about what is actually happening. • Start to refine your ideas about a focus- start small then divide by 10. • School visits
