BREASTFEEDING – Pros for moms • Burns Calories! • Easy and Convenient! (Take off your shirt, and boom, meal served) • • Protects against some breast and ovarian cancers: While breastfeeding, estrogen levels are very low. Research has shown that the longer you breastfeed, the risks for these cancers goes down • • MAY delay menstrual period: Again, estrogen levels are low and many women think • Special bonding between the two. • Finally, it’s natural.
BREASTFEEDING – Pros for babies • Protects against ear infections, colds, and viruses: If the child does have any of the above, the severity will most likely be lessened because of the protection from the breastmilk • Helps brain to grow and develop • Less learning and behavior difficulties • Less diaper rash and other skin problems • Less colic, less crying • Easy to digest: It is almost impossible to have a constipated • breastfed baby! • Less diarrhea • Protects against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, leukemia, some childhood cancers, and juvenile-onset diabetes Om nom nomnom…
BREASTFEEDING - Cons • Time Consuming • Takes a lot of energy • Frustration for Mothers due to anxiety or just learning the process • Physical problems such as Mastitis, plugged milk ducts and engorgement.
BOTTLEFED – Pros • Bottle-fed babies need to be fed less frequently since it is more difficult to digest. • If you are bottle feeding your baby, you know exactly how much milk your baby has had. • You do not need to be present each time the baby has to be fed; some other family member or friend can also feed the baby. • Your social life does not need to be curtailed. BOTTLEFED - Cons • More likely to develop illnesses, such as diarrhoea or a chest, ear or urine infection. • Hard to get the perfect temperature. • Need to keep the equipment used clean • Bottle fed babies were found to have an increased risk of obesity, at least until six years of age. • Can be expensive compared to Breastfeeding. • If you decided not to breastfeed but want to switch to it, it is difficult to reverse the decision and begin breastfeeding.
