  10. Digital Electronics Electronics refers to the flow of charge (moving electrons) through semiconductors (Si, GaAs, …). Electrical refers to the flow of charge through metal conductors. Digital Electronics are Electronic System that uses digital signals Digital electronics are representations of Boolean algebra and are used in computers, digital communication systems, and other consumer products.

  15. Embedded Systems • An embedded system is a special-purpose computer system designed to perform one or a few dedicated functions, often with real-time computing constraints.

What should a computer scientist know about electronics? • Knowing something about physical nature of information (voltages and currents) can be useful in understanding what goes in and out of a computer, memory, etc. • Knowing something about the electronic devices (e. g. CMOS) can be useful in understanding the restrictions on size, weight and performance of working systems • Learning enough electronics to be able to carry out simple performance and power calculations can be useful in understanding the limits of actual physical hardware
