12. The Awesome Vacation Anushka Jain Princess Dawn was tired of being a princess. She wanted a vacation! People told her to do EVERY THING! She felt as if she was trapped in an unknown world. She was supposed to be sleeping but, instead she was sitting on the floor writing facts about her. As she was writing, she heard a trumpet blaring. It was as loud as a lion’s roar. She hurried outside. It was her cousin Tim! He wanted to talk to her in private. She led him to a wonderful room at the top of the castle. It had two comfy chairs, a table with two cinnamon buns on it. They sat, ate and then Tim started talking “I received the letter you sent me … so I decided to send you on a vacation to Destin, Florida. You’ll love it there.” “Thank you!” screamed Dawn! “I will be coming and my friend Camden is coming, he is bringing his girl friend Lilia along. Lilia’s parents live there. “That’s great.” Dawn said. Later Dawn, Tim, Camden, and Lilia boarded the plane. Whoosh! The trip had begun! Since it was a first class plane Dawn took a nap. Three hours passed they were just passing the border of Europe. It was raining cats and dogs. She wished she didn’t have to go for two days only. Finally they landed. As they climbed in the limousine, Tim and Lilia declared that they would get married at the beach! There would be a giant cake ….blah, blah, blah. Dawn was tired of hearing about the plans, so she went up to her room. She got some paper, a pencil; she sat on her bed and drew the beach. That night Dawn heard a strange noise. She went in the isle, and she saw Tim with Lilia; she wondered where they were going. Tim was dressed in a tux & Lilia dressed in a bright red dress. Dawn decided it was best to leave them alone. The next day Dawn went to the wedding. It was boring. Finally they went to the beach. The waves were perfect. They took a ride and saw a dolphin. After the ride they went to a smoothie shop. She ordered a giant watermelon smoothie. After that they went back to the hotel. The next day they went parasailing. Dawn loved it and wanted to do it again. The next day they boarded the plane and left. Dawn would never forget that trip.

13. Underwater Adventure • Anushka Jain • On a hot summer day in June, I was playing with my four good friends, Ocean, Lauren, Sanu, and Tanya outside in the afternoon sun. Wow, it was a hot summer day! We went inside to grab some lemonade and I took a look at the temperature. Geez, it had struck 125 degrees Fahrenheit! My friends came to look. While they were looking I went upstairs to my mom’s office and gave her a glass of lemonade. Then, I asked her, “Mom, can we go to the pool?” • “Sure.” I headed downstairs and told my friends. • We changed into our bathing suits and headed to the pool. I forgot to take off my necklace. We jumped together but for some reason a tornado of bubbles were swarming around us. I couldn’t hold my breath any longer and tried to swim up. I couldn’t see a thing! Suddenly the tornado stopped. We swam up to the surface and we took giant gulps of air. Then we realized that we weren’t in the pool anymore… we were in the ocean! • Scared, I looked at my feet; instead of feet I had a… mermaid tail! I was in the ocean and I was a mermaid. My friends had also realized the fact. • Together we thought of things to do. Tanya suggested we go to shore. Sanu suggested we should see if we could breathe underwater. We agreed with Sanu. I dipped down under the water and opened my eyes. Then, I took a deep breath. I could breath! I popped up to the surface and told my friends, “I can breathe!” We all tried going under water. We all popped up and started to laugh. • I noticed my necklace was glowing. I touched it and out came a scroll saying: Dear Newcomers, You are magical; when you touch the magic necklace in water with your pinkie you become a mermaid. Please come down to meet me. I’m under you. Just dive. Sincerely, The Queen of Mermaids I showed the letter to my friends. Ocean said I should try putting the scroll in my necklace. So, I shoved the scroll. 3, 2, 1, Splash! We had dived. I saw a glimmer coming and saw the queen. She was a pretty mermaid with a violet tail just like Lauren’s and flowing long hair. Behind her were 3 other mermaids. One had a hot pink tail like me, another had an ocean blue tail like Ocean, another had a golden tail like Tanya and the last one had a green tail like Sanu. All the tails gleamed in the sunlit water. • “Welcome”, said the queen, “I am Queen Tia. I want to let you know that you have come to a very dangerous place.” • “Why?” I asked • “Because an evil merman has taken over the ocean. My four daughters and I managed to escape. My son is stuck in the deep, dark dungeons. The evil merman’s name is Brady. He threatens to put poison in the ocean if my son does not hand over the Magic Necklace. He does not have it… you do.” • “Me!” I said surprised. • “Yes” said Tia. He has sharks all over the place to get the necklace. If he gets the necklace he will be the king! He also has cast a spell that no newcomers can go home until he gets the necklace. If you don’t have the necklace you can’t go home. The only way is to get the Crown of Wonders. The Crown of Wonders cannot be retrieved by evil. But it can destroy evil if placed on its head for 15 seconds.” • “Wow” I said. I couldn’t believe it. • The Crown of Wonders was hidden down in a deep cave. Tia had to leave us because she said the sharks could see the glimmer she made. But, she left behind her youngest daughter. • Her name was Selena, she had a hot pink tail, and she had long, blonde, flowing hair. Her eyes were a crystal blue, her skin was fair and lovely and her lips were a rosy red. Her voice was as sweet as a flower. She swam gracefully and her smile was warm and welcoming. • We continued our long journey. Suddenly Selena stopped. • “Shh” She whispered “We are in Brady’s territory now” • She swam downward as quiet as a mouse. We followed silently. I was shocked to see how ugly that place was. Mold clogged out the sunlight and it was murky and dark. The water was green and lots of slime floated everywhere. I couldn’t believe a beautiful land could be so ugly. It was the exact opposite of the ocean I’d been scuba-diving last summer. All the plants were dull and couldn’t create photosynthesis so it was hard to breath. Soon my breathing became calm again and I caught sight of a green plant. • “How could it be green?” I thought. • Selena pulled back the leaves and revealed a dark cave. Selena motioned for us to follow her. Then she dived in. One by one we followed keeping watch for sharks. Once we were all under, Selena shouted “Lumos!” and her nails lit up. The entrance was narrow but the cave was wide enough for all of us to swim side by side. As we swam down Sanu suddenly stopped. Something was blocking her. Selena said that she wasn’t strong enough and the wall was for safety. She told Sanu to say Lumos and her nails would light up. Next Lauren got caught, then Ocean, and then Tanya. Selena and I were the only ones left. I was starting to miss my mother, my father and my stuffed animals. I was glad that Selena was with me. All of a sudden Selena stopped. She was caught! Now I was afraid. I said Lumos and my nails lit up. • I continued. Soon I reached the point where I saw a faint light. As I swam nearer it glowed more brightly. When my eyes adjusted to the light, I saw the Crown of Wonders. I picked it up and swam upward. At the top everyone was waiting for me. As we swam out of the cave a shark spotted us. We swam away before it took a second glance at us. We swam to the castle and I took off my necklace. Then I hid it under my hair. • We swam up to Brady and offered the crown to him. Since he was greedy he snatched the crown out of my hands. I bowed and the necklace fell! He realized he had been tricked into wearing the Crown of Wonders! He tried to pull it off. • A loud and bright explosion startled us. Brady was destroyed! The explosion’s light spread around. The ocean was beautiful again. The entire ocean rejoiced. Tia freed her son and crowned him king of the ocean by placing the Crown of the Ocean on his head. She would put the Crown of Wonders back in the cave. • We were about to return when Tia came up to me and said that I could have the Crown of Wonders since evil was no more. Then she told Ocean, Sanu, Tanya, and Lauren that they could have Enchanted Crowns so they would always be remembered in the mermaid world. Then Selena gave each of us a jewel that was the exact same color as our tails. • Before we left I told everyone that we would return someday. But that’s another story. I thanked them and pressed my necklace with my thumb. A second later we were at the entrance of the pool. I was not going to swim. I was going home. • When I got home my mom asked why I didn’t swim and I said “It’s not what you think it is.”, a glimmer in my eye.
