  3. What was the purpose of the Crusades? • 1. Recapture the Holy Land from Muslim control. • 2. Prevent a Muslim conquest of the Byzantine Empire.

  4. DISCUSSION • Discuss the following with your partner: • What was so special about the Holy Land?

  5. How did the purpose change over time? • The Crusades evolved into a series of wars that last hundreds of years and actually took place in several different regions.

  11. What were the results of the Crusades? • 1. There was mixed success from a political and military standpoint. • 2. They did not permanently reconquer the Holy Land, but Crusaders did control it for a period of time.

  12. What were the results of the Crusades? (cont.) • 3. When combined with the Reconquista, or retaking of Spain from Muslim rule, the Crusades succeeded in stopping Islam from spreading deeper into mainland Europe.

  13. What affect did the Crusades have on Christianity? • 1. Christianity spread into new regions outside of Europe.2. The inability for Crusaders to hold onto the Holy Land weakened the power of the Pope and the Church.

  14. WRITING • Write 2-3 sentence about the following: • Why did the Crusades weaken the power of the Church?

  15. What effect did the Crusades have on feudalism? • 1. Many nobles spent most of their money to fight in the Crusades. Some nobles lost their lives.

  16. What effect did the Crusades have on feudalism? (cont.) • 2. With less nobility around to balance the power, kings began to take more control. • 3. Kings taking more control greatly weakened the feudal system.

  17. What effect did the Crusades have on the economy of Europe? • 1. The Crusades exposed Europeans to more advance civilizations. • 2. The Crusades allowed for an increase in the amount of trade between Europe and the Middle East.

  19. What effect did the Crusades have on the economy of Europe? (cont.) • 3. This increase in trade allowed for the growth of many cities in Italy. • 4. These expanding economy of the new trade-based cities would propel Europe into the Renaissance.
