STAKE HOLDERS • Consumers of Produce • Local stores that sell produce • Major Stores (Coles and Woolworths) • Seed and Farm Suppliers
THE PROBLEM • FOOD WASTAGE • Problem definition - The problem we have chosen is that of wastage and how to utilise this wastage in a way that can reduce it both from the community farm and the wastage from local stores and the way in which can be used in sustaining the farm to increase the produce that can be both used by the local community and the local stores that take part in the project (Community Farm). The reason why wastage is such an important aspect of a community farm is that it will help in combating the need to buy soils, also this food wastage can be used in a compost system that is being implemented to increase our supply of worms that can be fed to the fish that will form part of our solution and food production which can supply produce to both the stores and the community.
THE SOLUTION • INTRODUCE AQUAPONICS • The solution we have come up with is that of introducing an Aquaponics system in which fish are fed worms that are farmed alongside that of the produce that is produced the reason why we have come up with this solution is because research has shown that with adequate fish, fresh water, and substrate to plant what we grow we can do away with harsh chemicals that have been known to cause certain health problems and with our community wanting to live healthier and longer lives. The initial setup cost in a system like this has minimal expense of around 3,000 to 4,000 dollars but if we can get this subsidised by some of the local store owners and other community groups that take part.
INNOVATION/IMPLEMENTATION • SLOWLY CHANGE OVER TO AQUAPONICS SYSTEM TO INCREASE SUPPLY. • The Aquaponics system will be an innovation system the reason why this system is such an innovation is because it will create two food sources for the community to use when things are up and running sufficiently to produce both fish and fresh produce. The implementation of this system will take 18 months to get running sufficiently to produce the much needed nutrients required for the fresh produce, this reason for this is the fish need to grow enough just so they can produce the much needed nutrients in large enough quantities to be used in the growing beds of the fresh produce and once this system is up and working in the time that is needed then we can introduce new growing beds to produce more fresh produce and we can even introduce other species of fish or a species of crayfish called red claw.
