  1. Essential Question • How did Spain organize & draw wealth from it’s empire in the Americas?

  2. Beginnings of African Slavery in America Chapter 2 Section 4

  3. Origins • By the early 1600’s, slavery was well established in the Americas • Slavery in the Americas took off w/ the rise of sugar plantations • Spain & Portugal enslaved Africans for 4 basic reasons: • Africans were immune to European diseases • Africans had no ties to America - No outside friends, family, or supporters to help them • Africans provided a cheap, renewable source of labor • Africans had extensive agricultural experience - Most had been life-long farmers in Africa

  4. Test Question • Why did the slave trade increase in the 1500’s? • The sugar plantations in the colonies came to depend on slave labor • The African kings wanted to rid their kingdoms of criminals • Wars in Africa caused Africans to immigrate to the Americas • Europeans needed goods, such as alcohol & guns, from Africa

  5. Triangular Trade Middle Passage

  6. The Slave Trade • Over time, the colonies became dependent on slave labor • Slave traders made voyages to the W. African coast to pick up slaves in exchange for: • Textiles • Ironware • Alcohol • Guns/Gunpowder/Ammunition/Horses • By the late 1800’s, when the slave trade ended, btwn 12 & 15 million Africans had been enslaved in the Americas • Approx. 2 million died during the voyage from Africa to America • The voyage of the slaves from Africa to America was known as the Middle Passage • This was the middle leg of “Triangular Trade”

  7. Slave Codes • Some Africans resisted the confines of slavery • The most common way was to run away • In response, Europeans passed slave codes, or laws meant to regulate the treatment of slaves • Most of these laws were designed to: • Punish slaves who “misbehaved” • Keep slaves from bettering themselves • Slave codes also led to rampant discrimination and racism • Over time, Europeans came to the strong belief that Africans’ dark-skin made them inferior (i.e. Africans = dark skin = inferior = SLAVES)

  8. Test Question • Which is NOT true of African slaves in America? • African slaves were treated better than Native American slaves • Some African slaves tried to run away • Some African slaves were experienced farmers • Most African slaves were immune to European diseases
