  1. POTUS Goal: to formulate a speech topic, plan a structure and main ideas.

  2. To begin, set up a document or page titled ‘Speech Planning’ in your English folder.

  3. Step One: Choose which type you will do. • Inaugural • State of the Union • Memorial • Pre-election • Response to war or disaster • Address on an issue/keynote • International address Add this to your document.

  4. Step Two: determine your context. • Is your speech set in the present or is it historical? • What is happening economically, socially and politically? • Who is your audience? • Add this to your document.

  5. Step 3: PATMI DETERMINE THE FOLLOWING: • Purpose • Audience • Tone • Main Idea • Add this to your document.

  6. Step 4: Structuring your speech Outline INAUGURAL ADDRESS • Be frank and honest about the realities of the economy and wars • Address the sagging morale and lack of confidence • Appear strong • Offer an olive branch to the world • Make a call-to-action for personal contributions (along the lines of “Ask not what your country can do…”)

  7. STATE OF THE UNION • Outlines policy, • challenges, • the direction for the country.

  8. MEMORIAL • Honour the family • Note achievements • Personalise the loss • What they gave to the nation • What we can learn from them • Saying goodbye

  9. RESPONSE TO DISASTER OR WAR • Honour the dead • Villify the enemy • Justify your position/rescue efforts • Outline strategy/approach • Unite the people behind you as their leader

  10. Lay out the structure you intend to follow into your document.

  11. Step 5: research • Research your particular speech type using American Rhetoric and record language features, structural features and how you intend to use pronouns.
