7. Summary • We learned that any rock can change if the right conditions are present. A metamorphic or igneous rock can be changed to a sedimentary rock by weathering or erosion. A sedimentary rock can be changed to an igneous rock by magma.

8. Why are rocks and minerals important? • Rocks and minerals are used in a variety of materials and products. Examples: • Large buildings and monuments are built with granite and marble. • Tile in homes are made by slate or shale. • Salt is extracted from halite. • Coal is used as a form of energy and heat.

10. Why is knowing the mineral compositions of rocks important? • Some rocks may be easier to mine certain minerals. The higher the mineral percentage the easier it will be to mine.

11. Would all mineral compositions be the same for all? • NO, each area has different mineral contents. Coal can be found in Kentucky, gold can be found in California. Texas is know for Topaz, and petrified wood.

12. How do people use this information • Builders may use this information to keep cost down. Builders would want to know what minerals or rocks are found in areas that they can use to build with. Finding local materials would keep cost down.

13. Changes happen all the time. Our earth is constantly changing all the time. Rocks change from igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Any rock can be changed to any type if the conditions are right. Industry refines and mines rocks and minerals to make many products that we use daily.
