  1. Muscle System Minae Kwon Sarah Bock

  2. Introduction -Over 600 muscles -Has many functions, including helping you move -2 types of muscle -3 types of muscle tissue -Made out of many small cells = muscle fibers

  3. Function • Provide strength • Posture balance • Movement (CONTRACT) • Provide heat to keep the body warm

  4. Muscle Shapes • Spindle shaped- biceps/triceps • Flat- diaphragm • Triangular- deltiod muscle at the top of your arm • Circular- around the mouth/pupils

  5. Skeletal • Voluntary • Striated • Multi nuclei • Most powerful movements • Rapid, but easily fatigued

  6. Smooth • Involuntary • Single Nuclei

  7. Cardiac • Found in the heart • Straighted • Rareley tired’ • Many nuclei

  8. Structure

  9. Structure • Has two types of protein • MYOSIN AND ACTIN • Contract muscle • Myofibril: Bundles of cylindrical organelles made up of myosin and actin that help muscle contraction

  10. Contraction • Work together in pars (contracting and relaxing) for some muscles • Always pull, never push • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK7Z-Z7kKEY

  11. Injuries

  12. Injuries

  13. Diseases

  14. Diseases • Diseases that have with connection between the spinal cord and the brain affect muscles as well. >Multiple Sclerosis >Polio

  15. What do muscles need? • -Glucose >Builds energy got from food sources • EXCERSISE >Use of muscles in various parts will keep them healthy • Healthy diet

  16. Links Contraction  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK7Z-Z7kKEY skeletal muscle and how other muscles work • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbTah5NVOtU&feature=related basic contraction of muscle (put with video) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-ozRNVhGVg&feature=related three types of muscles • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJDrR3sZPZU

  17. Why do muscles twitch after a hard workout? • >when sleeping • Nerves send an impulse- minor twitching • Muscle fatigue/injury/stress/caffine/disorders • After intensive activity, the recovery process takes some time to be complete. Chemical substances that act as neural signals causing the muscles to contract must be recycled. Until they are, the muscle cells remain "irritable" and may spontaneously contract.
