LEARNING OUTCOMES To understand that animals (including humans) can be 1 sorted into groups based on what they eat To understand the 5 food groups and the amount of 2 each needed to create a healthy, balanced diet To understand the nutrients that carbohydrates, 3 fruits, vegetables, proteins and dairy products provide and to know why we limit fat and sugar intake

  3. HOW DO ANIMALS GET FOOD? Animals cannot make their own food. Animals get the energy they need to survive from the food they eat. Humans are animals too, so need food to survive. Plants can make their own food by creating energy when sunlight shines on their leaves.

  4. WHAT TYPES OF FOODS DO ANIMALS EAT? Animals can be put into groups based on the types of food they eat. CARNIVORES HERBIVORES OMNIVORES ONLY EAT MEAT ONLY EAT PLANTS EAT MEAT AND PLANTS

  5. CARNIVORES, HERBIVORES & OMNIVORES HERBIVORES CARNIVORES Herbivores only eat plants, fruit and leaves. Tapir, zebra and cows are all types of herbivores. Carnivores can be split into more than one group. Some carnivores only eat meat, such as cats (from house cats to big cats). However, many carnivores do occasionally eat plants, such as foxes who eat meat as well as fruit, vegetables and fungi. OMNIVORES Omnivores are animals, such as bears or humans that eat both plants and other animals (meat).

  6. WHAT SHOULD HUMANS EAT? For a healthy, balanced diet, humans should eat: Fruits and vegetables Carbohydrates Protein Dairy and alternatives They should avoid sugary foods and try to drink 6-8 cups of water a day.

  7. WHAT SHOULD HUMANS DRINK? Humans must keep hydrated - the government says aim for 6 to 8 cups or glasses daily. Sip on water, low-fat milks, sugar-free drinks, and even tea or coffee – it all counts! Fruit juice and smoothies are okay too, but watch out for sneaky sugars that can be harsh on teeth. Keep these treats under 150ml total each day.
