Canadian history • Canada was found by Jacques Cartier • Named from an Iroquois word Kanata meaning village • This is because the Vikings had a small village near or maybe in Canada • Then the War of the League of Augsburg began in 1689 • The war started in the east but was also fought in the west • The English were stronger in terms of population and wealth • Despite the odds New France still won

History continued • Some credit the win to the disunited English colony who was also full of mutual jealousy • The English planned a big attack on Quebec but it failed • At one time Canada was all French • English-speaking immigrants came over in 1867 • Newfoundland was the first part of Canada explored and the last to become a providence • Canada became a country on July 1st, 1867

  4. Geography • 60 00 N, 95 00 W is the exact location of Canada • Total area of Canada is 9,984,670 sq km • Climate varies from temperate in south to subarctic and arctic in north • Second largest country behind Russia • Made mostly of hills

  5. George Cartier house • House of the founder of Canada • Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. • Has been modernized • Opened in 1885 • Was a hotel but became a historical site

HOCKEY HALL OF FAME • Located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada • A big attraction sense hockey is their national sport • It’s a place to honor some of the best NHL players to have played the game • Cost for general people is $17.50 • Now includes the NHL zone which is 6,000 sq ft of new exhibits • NHL zone has two nine-foot statues “guarding” the entrance

NIAGRA FALLS • The falls are 36 miles in length • More than 6 million of cubic feet of water go over the Crestline a day during tourist highpoints • The Canadian falls drop an average of 57 feet into the lower Niagara River • the speed of the falls is 68 mph • May be the fastest moving water • The falls have moved back seven miles in 12,500 years

CASA LOMA • A house for Sir Henry Pellatt and Lady Mary Pellatt • Took three years and $3.5 million to build • Equipped with secret passageways throughout the house • The house put the two in debt so they had to leave it behind • Was converted into a hotel • One of Toronto's top ten tourist attractions

  9. CN TOWER • It is 1,815 feet tall • A concrete communications and observations tower • Construction started in 1972 • Biggest attraction is the edgewalk • A lot of people like seeing the glass floor • The look out level is a great attraction there

Modern facts • Hockey is currently the biggest sport in Canada • Canada holds 9% of the worlds water supply • The moose is Canada's national animal • French is the official language of Canada • 77% percent of Canada's population is Christian • Canada is the largest producer of zinc and uranium
