Outline of Presentation • PPC History at UNCW • Handheld and Pocket PCs • Pocket PC Software for Science and Mathematics • Student Assessment with PPC • Student Response System • Future Developments If Pocket PCs are the next wave of the future, then can we do useful mathematics on them?
PPC History at UNCW The Players Philosophy Funding
Multi-disciplinary team - technology projects since 1990. Pocket PC History at UNCW • Funded by Pearson Education and UNCW -1999 to explore handheld computer technology for teaching science and mathematics.
Pocket PC History • Initial work done with Hewlett-Packard Jornada 690 and 720 handheld computers • Wireless networks installed in the chemistry, math, and computer science buildings
Numina II Project • Internal seed grant to study the use of the Pocket PC vs. the handheld PC. • Is it possible to do serious college-level work on PPC? • What additional hardware and software are needed to make the PPC a viable option for students and faculty?
