The First Steps Towards Terrestrial Vertebrates Amphibians:
What are some common amphibians? • Frogs • Toads • Salamanders • Newts
Class: Amphibia Amphibians have several shared characteristics that group them together. The most important of these is the amphibian’s moist permeable skin. Water and oxygen can be absorbed through the permeable skin. The skin is kept moist by the numerous MUCOUS GLANDS found in the skin.
General Amphibian Facts! • Amphibians are ectotherms. • Frogs are the most successful amphibians. • All adult amphibians are carnivorous and will eat anything that they can catch and swallow.
General Amphibian Facts cont • Most amphibians undergo the process of metamorphosis changing from an aquatic life stage to a terrestrial one.
Heart Evolution • In order to move on land the amphibians needed to have large amounts of food and oxygen. • The 3 chambered heart helped to ensure the evolutionary success of amphibians by ensuring the proper amount of oxygen was given to the cells.
3 Orders of Amphibians • Urodela • Salamanders and Newts • Anura • Frogs and Toads • Apoda • Caecilians
Order Urodela • Possess a long slender body with a tail and legs that are bent at 90 degree angles. • Their sizes vary from a few millimeters to almost 6 feet in length as in the case of the Giant Chinese Salamander.
Order Anura • Anura is Greek for “without tail” • Includes Frogs and Toads • Usually possess long hind limbs that are used for jumping. • Many species produce deadly toxins • i.e. Poison Dart Frogs and Cane Toads
Anurans cont. • Frogs and Toads are capable of producing a wide range of sounds through their VOCALCORDS.
Order Apoda • Also known as the Caecilians, not this kind...
Apoda cont • The caelians are the least known group of amphibians, so much so they do not even have a common English name. • They are limbless amphibians who inhabit tropical aquatic and terrestrial environments. • Some species can lack eyes completely, while others have eyes just sensitive enough to tell the difference between light and dark. • They can vary in colors from grays to browns even a stunning blue color
Thank you! • Hope you learned something and maybe have a new appreciation for amphibians…more so than this guy.
