UCC & the Economic Justice Journey • UCC General Synod XXVII (2009) established the Economic Justice Covenant Program • Encouraged all congregations of the UCC to become Economic Justice Churches • Purpose: • Study economic injustices, • Pray and discern God's will for their economic justice ministry • Draft and adopt an Economic Justice Covenant • Engage in actions to promote economic justice. • Three UCC churches (2 x NC, 1 x TN) have passed covenants

  5. Key Elements: EJ Covenant Why are we proposing a Covenant? • Shadow Rock values being a just and inclusive community • Justice should underlie everything we say and do • This covenant formalizes these key beliefs • A compelling pronouncement to the community

  6. Key Elements: EJ Covenant • We Will Stand For and Prioritize: • Justice Education • Service and Care for People in Need • Empower the Disadvantaged • Personal and Church Introspection • Joining with Like-minded Partners • Take Political Action

  7. Near-Term Focal Areas LOF 2014-2015 EJ Focal Areas (from 5/17 workshop) • Microloans • Get Out the Vote/Advocacy • Female Empowerment • Water Justice • The Arizona We Want Poll Focal Area teams will build out program ideas over the summer
