Use each of the following terms in a separate sentence: thermal conduction, radiation, convection, greenhouse effect, and global warming. (write the definition)
2. Which of the following is the best example of thermal conduction? a. a light bulb warming a lampshade b. an egg cooking in a frying pan c. water boiling in a pot d. gases circulating in the atmosphere
3. Describe three ways that energy is transferred in the atmosphere. Energy from the sun warms the atmosphere by radiation. The Earth reradiates energy from the sun, which warms the atmosphere. The air directly above the Earth’s surface is also heated by conduction. Warm air is then circulated through the atmosphere by convection currents.
4. What is the difference between the green house effect and global warming? The green house effect is the Earth’s natural heating process. Global warming is the rise in the average global temperature which can caused an increase in the greenhouse effect.
5. What is the radiation balance? It is the balance between incoming solar energy and thermal energy that the Earth radiates into space.
7. How does the process of convection rely on radiation? It relies on radiation from the sun. If radiation from the sun stopped, air would not be warmed and convection currents would eventually stop circulating.
