Ancient sewer systems • There has been evidence of sewer lines dating back to 8000 B.C although the pipes usually lead to a creek. • First flush operated toilets used in 3000 B.C • This system had fallen into despair sometime in the middle ages. • In the 19th century people started to dump their waste out into the street. This caused many diseases to outbreak all over the world.
Ancient sewer system Cont. • This caused people to set standards on how they handle sewage. • Our modern sewer system started to adapt to what it is now during the 20th century
Modern Sewer systems • In Boston during the 1700’s people would dig up a hole where they would dump their waste. When the hole was filled people would hire a special team to empty it or to dig a new hole. • After the Civil War, it was proven that contaminated water supply and unsanitary waste disposal caused contagious diseases. • The English Public Health Code of 1848 made a modern code for plumbing that the world could follow.
Modern Sewer systems cont. • The Metropolitan Health Law considered most complete in the world. • Twenty years later the New York Metropolitan Board of Health, the first health board in the U.S, was made. • In 1876 Boston made their first sewer system
