Water and Solutions Chapter 6 Section 3
Water’s Polarity • Polarity is the property of having 2 opposite poles, or ends
In water, the electrostatic attraction is called a hydrogen bond.
MixtureswithWater • A mixture is a combination of 2 or more substances in which each substance retains its individual characteristics.
Homogenous mixtures • When a mixture has a uniform composition throughout • solution
There are 2 components in a solution: a solvent and a solute
A solvent is a substance in which another substance is dissolved. • Water is the universal solvent
A solute is the substance that is dissolved by the solvent • salt
Heterogenous Mixtures • In a heterogenous mixture the components remain distinct, that is you can tell what they are individually.
Colloid ??? • A colloid is a heterogenous mixture in which the particles do not settle out • Fog, smoke, butter, milk, paint, ink • Blood is a colloid made up of plasma, cells, and platelets
