WIKIPEDIA There are many advantages to using Wikipedia for research. Also, there are various problems with using it.
Some Wikipedia Links There are some very interesting links within the wikipedia.com site. These include: Recent Changes Page (where one can assess recent topics that have been added or edited. These topics are more prone to misinformation) Reference Desk (staffed by wikipediavolunteers who try to help guide the user to needed information) About Wikipedia Page (tells some of the background and limitations of this website)
Advantages Information in Wikipedia can be very current, as it can be edited at any time. According to Wikipedia, about 75,000 editors are participating, from “scholars to casual readers.” There are usually links that guide the users to related pages on the World Wide Web. Anyone with Web access can edit Wikipedia.
Neutral Points Wikipedia articles are possibly free from a regional point of view, as it is open to all who hae web access. Information in Wikipedia can be updated frequently. Editors can only add to or edit a Wikipedia entry
Negative Points Wikipedia entries are not signed. Some entries are excellent, while some are very poor. It is up to the user to determine if the entry is good or bad, usually by doing further research. Newer articles often contain significant misinformation, unencyclopedic content and validation (according to the About Wikipedia introduction)
Conclusion Thus, for research, using other sources rather than Wikipedia, is probably best.
