How did the farmers create a problem that caused the rivers to flood and the sounds to become shallower? The farmers created a problem that caused the rivers to flood and the sounds to become shallower by over using their land. The topsoil eroded and when it rained soil washed into the streams. Gradually this sediment moved to the sounds and made them even shallower and harder to travel.
What economic condition occurred after the war that created debt for the farmers? After the war, in 1819, an economic recession caused the state to go into debt. Land values fell and many farmers went into debt .
