My Motives • Interest, Curiosity, Perseverance, and UCAS • Interest – Dr.Dr.Shil(MBBS, BSc, MSc, MBPhD) • Curiosity – Brain + Emotions = Health • Perseverance – 1 whole day of writing and 99% of it was RESEARCH !
Definitions • What are ill thoughts ? • Let us take ill thoughts to be any thought which can cause unhappiness. (to you or others) • What are emotions? • Let us take emotions to be chemical exchanges of neurotransmitters at the synapses in the brain.
Disorder of the mind or the brain? What’s the difference ? Complex !?! Disorder of the brain can be physiologically explained Disorders of the mind cannot, ie autism stress.
What is depression? • Depression is a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal which can cause great spells of sadness for prolonged times, without any objective reason. • Catatonic depression • Postpartum depression • Melancholic depression • Atypical Depression • Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
Science behind Ill Thoughts - Molecules Serotonin or 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) It produces the feeling of happiness, however it has many other functions too. Dopamine It is often called the reward drug, as it is responsible for the brains reward system and punishment system

Postpartum Depression • 15% of women experience non-psychosis postpartum. • This can be treated simply by regular psychotherapy and loving support. • However 1% can experience postpartum psychosis. • This is treated with regular psychotherapy and antidepressants like citalopram. • However these women must be monitored very carefully as they can be very unpredictable... Even more than usual !
Post Traumatic Stress • Post traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder. • Common symptoms are flashbacks, hyper arousal. • There are many theories as to why this comes about : • A new one is that a protein called FK506 could be responsible to adult stress levels. • However studies from the Vietnam war show that people suffering from PTSD have a 20% decrease in size of their Hippocampus.
Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy • The pinnacle of ill thoughts causing illness! • So what is it ? • Termed as heart attack like symptoms after an emotional event. • There is no real cause and healing time last usually around 2 weeks. • In essence this is truly how just being sad can cause you to in rare cases die.
