What is Tuberculosis caused by? Tuberculosis is a disease caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs.
How is it transmitted? • Tuberculosis is spread through the air. If you are not treated properly TB disease can be fatal. • People who have it and breath in and out can spread the disease • Its not transmitted by kissing, shaking hands and sharing food and drinks.
What are the symptoms? • Some symptoms of TB disease are • Chills • Fever • Sweating at night • Weight loss • No appetite • Weakness and fatigue
How do you treat the Disease? • TB disease can be treated by taking several drugs for 6 to 12 months. If they stop using the drugs too soon they will become sick again also if they don’t take the drugs as directed.
History of the Disease • One third of the worlds current population has been infected by Tuberculosis. • It is estimated that 25,000 new cases are discovered each year in the U.S. • Tuberculosis started in 1882.
How to prevent Tuberculosis • If you want to prevent Tuberculosis you should get the vaccine. • The vaccine usually leaves a red bubbly mark 4 weeks after it has been given and then disappears into a faded area on the skin around 6 to 7 months later.
