Why Carpentry? It interests me I think it’s fun A life skill I will attain
My Idea • Build a fireplace mantel • First Step: • Pick what kind of design I wanted to go after.
Step Two Determine what can be done with what I have
Step Three Sketched my primary thoughts
Step Four I realized how much work that would be and re-sketched it
Steps Five, Six, and Seven • Step Five • Went to Homestead in Brookings and bought my wood, stain, conditioner, polyurethane, and brushes • Step Six • Take the boards home and sand them with 80, 120, and 220 grit sand paper • Step Seven • Wipe the board clean, apply conditioner, and apply stain. Let sit for a few minutes and wipe off.
Step Eight Apply polyurethane
Step Nine Before After Tare off tile and re-tile the wall and floor
Step 10 Pull off trim and nail on first boards
Step Eleven Put on first board that will be seen
Step Twelve Nail on the next four boards one inch up and one inch over
Step Thirteen Cut excess at a little under three inches
Step Fourteen Put on the last two front boards and the cap board
Beginners Luck I should have checked for it to be level but I got lucky
