    2. Unlocking Number Sense Presented by Melissa Davis

    3. Putting all of the Pieces Together Number Sense general understanding of number and operations. Using Number Sense Using understanding to make mathematical judgments. Developing strategies -developing strategies to solve complex problems -laying framework for Algebraic thinking

    4. The purpose of this presentation: Create common understandings Share common terms and definitions Continue the dialogue

    5. Essential Questions for K-2 What is Number Sense? What is important for K-2 classrooms? How can we foster increased skills in number sense?

    6. What is Number Sense? …Describes a cluster of ideas, such as the meaning of a number, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, the relative magnitude of numbers and skill in working with them. http://www.learnnc.org

    7. In the primary grades, children move from developing basic counting techniques to understanding number size and relationships, place value and operations. (NCTM)

    8. However, students develop this understanding at different rates in the primary grades.

    9. What is important for K-2 classrooms? Developing students’ understanding of numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems are focus areas for grades Pre K-2. NCTM

    10. Improving Number Sense Here are some ways that number sense can develop. Which would you prefer when learning about numbers? Number your choices from 1 (your favorite) to 4 (your least favorite). _____ Group work with problem solving _____ Use of Graphic representations _____ Daily routines _____ Games _____ Other?

    11. How can we foster increased skills in number sense? Group Work with problem solving There were thirteen pencils in our classroom pencil box. Six kids each took a pencil. How many pencils were left? Counting cubes-takes away six and remainder Thirteen marks on a piece of paper (crossing out six or seven marks that are left) Using a “double” to reason that 12 minus 6 is 6, so 13 minus 6 is one more than that, or 7. Relating to idea of tens. Counting out loud and using fingers.

    12. Graphic representations Use of a ten frame can help develop a “homeness” with numbers. http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=75 A hundreds chart is another valuable tool that contributes to children’s number sense..especially when they are introduced early in the year and used throughout the year.A hundreds chart is another valuable tool that contributes to children’s number sense..especially when they are introduced early in the year and used throughout the year.

    13. Daily Routines Pocket Chart Useful for counting, patterns, number sequence, odd and even numbers, and multiples of a number. Attendance Useful for counting, keeping track, one-to-one correspondence, connecting numerals and number names to the quantities they represent and recording numerical information. Counting Jar Useful for comparing and estimating quantities, exploring more than/less than and counting/keeping track.

    14. Classroom Routines cont. Calendar Useful for developing a sense of time, keeping track, counting, connecting number names, numerals and quantities and looking for patterns. Today’s Question Useful for collecting, recording and analyzing data, counting and comparing quantities and establishing one-to-one correspondence between a group and the data collected. Investigations in Number, Data, and Space

    15. Games Calculator (two more than machine) Guess My Number Websites-Games http://www.abc.net.au/countusin/games.htm http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/laac/numbers/ch1.shtml http://illuminations.nctm.org/WebResourceList.aspx?Ref=2&Std=0&Grd=0

    16. Unlocking the Puzzle Flexibility is the key to be able to take numbers apart and put them together as the basis for developing good number sense. Investigations Help students unlock the key! Students need many opportunities to discover that numbers can be made from other numbers by taking them apart and putting them together.
