Old English Looks and sounds Very different to Modern English
Also referred to as Anglo-Saxon • Spoken and written in parts of what we now know of as England and South-eastern Scotland. • Mid 5th century – 12th century • Had many different influences and was constantly transitioning
The Exeter Book • Largest known collection of Old English literature that exists today. • Exact date is unknown, but it is thought to have been authored between 871 and 990 • In 1050 the first Bishop of Exeter gave the book to the library at Exeter Cathedral. • It contains a varied collection of literary works: poems, riddles, prayers, stories. • One of the poems is called The Seafarer
Assignment Read and consider the Anglo-Saxon poem “The Seafarer”. Write a compare and contrast discussion on the difference in tone presented in the two halves of the poem. Remember to write about the possible reasons for the difference in tone. 20 points available
