FAA COE Program Review David A. Lange University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign October 7, 2004
Overview of FY2004 Program • Pavement Research Program • Moisture curling of concrete slabs for airfield applications • D.A. Lange and J.R. Roesler • Fatigue in Airport Pavements • S.H. Carpenter • Materials Testing for NAPTF Base/Subbase and Subgrade Layers • E.Tutumluer • Design of Flexible Overlay Systems for Asphalt Pavements: Phase II Advanced Model Development • W.G. Buttlar • Fatigue and Fracture Behavior of Airfield Concrete Slabs • S.P. Shah, B. Mu, J.R. Roesler • Added Project • Anti-icing Coating Self Cleaning Properties and Wearing Characteristics Study at ORD • B.J. Dempsey • Wildlife Research Program • Bird Strike Advisory System • Ed Herricks • Outreach Program • Summer COE Internship Program for Minority Graduate Students • B.J. Dempsey
Work Plan for FY2005 • Continuation and Completion of Current Projects • Moisture curling -- complete goals in FY2005 • Fatigue in Airport Pavement -- current student is near graduation, but could be extended with new objectives with a new student • NAPTF material testing -- extendable with new objectives • Flexible Overlays -- extend with new focus; move toward design and implementation • Fatigue and Fracture -- NU student near graduation; FY2005 to complete project goals • Internship Program -- open program to other schools with minority populations
Work Plan for FY2005 • New ideas : • High Performance Concrete for Airport Pavements • We see reduced slab sizes, greater conservativism driven by unpredictability of materials • Today: Flex strength is main parameter-- INADEQUATE. • Future: Consider other material behavior -- fracture, agg interlock, fibers, dowel issues, admixtures • Implementation of Superpave mix designs for FAA • Antioxidants in asphalts for enhanced durability -- additives reduce oxidation and embrittlement • Performance based guide for hot-poured crack sealants • 3-D analysis and modeling of asphalt materials • 3-D analysis of aircraft loading pulse • Integration of Denver data, ATLaS, NAPTF data • Pavement Mgmt System for National Airports • Improved methods for pavement condition assessment, NDT (e.g GPR), uniform stds and software • Winter maintenance, skid resistance
Latest news on OMP • Contract with OMP is assured; work underway • 2004-5 program • Research • Subgrade stabilization • Raw materials • PCC Mix Designs • Outreach • Minority- and Women-Owned Businesses • Continuing education • Co-op internship program • Kickoff meeting on Oct 28, 2004
The “New” Center • FAA and OMP are two major sponsors • Project costs separate and accountable • Center objectives unified and leveraged • Leverage and Collaboration • Share administrative costs • Common research goals • Complementary Outreach Program • Greater visibility of Center activities
