Background information • Jean-Marie Charcot, Pierre Marie, and Howard Henry Tooth are the three French Doctors who discovered this disease in 1886 • The Charcot Marie Tooth Disease is also called hereditary sensory and motor neuropathy. • “Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the most common inherited disorder that involves the peripheral nerves, affecting an estimated 150,000 people in the United States. It occurs in all races and ethnic groups. Worldwide, this disorder affects about 1 in 2,500 people.”
How does this happen? • “Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease is a neurological disorder that causes progressive weakness. The condition is caused by damage to the peripheral nerves due to impairment of the axons, or nerve fibers that transfer electrical impulses.” • Usually symptoms of this disease occur by age 30. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLuXqXgm-iw
Being Diagnosed. • The doctor asks about your family history of the disease, and also checks over you to see if you have any symptoms of foot deformities, muscle weakness, and other orthopedic problems such as scoliosis or hip dysplasia. All of those symptoms could be present but there is a lot more than just that. • Often CMT can either be misdiagnosed or undiagnosed because the symptoms can have such a big range. Even within the same family the symptoms may vary.
