  6. Balanced Literacy • Phonics • Letter/Sound of the Week • Show-and-Tell with 1 item that starts with the target letter/sound (Mondays) • Blending sounds together • Predictable Charts • Class Books and Big Books • Poems • ABC/Word Work/ Making Words • Read Alouds/Partner Reading

  7. Writer’s Workshop • We begin by Modeled Writing and then Sharing the Pen. • Mini Lessons are given focusing on certain skills. (picking a topic, beginning with a capital letter and finger spacing, listening for sounds) • The children are able to write in their journals about an assigned topic or one of their own choice. • Children have opportunities to share in the Author’s Chair.

  9. Math • Georgia Department of Education Frameworks • The topics covered include counting, comparing numbers, addition and subtraction, place value, sorting, shapes. • Provide small group differentiated hands on lessons and activities that become more complex as the year goes on.

Behavior Plan • The classroom expectations are listed on the wall. • Smiley Stamp-The child had a terrific day! • Red-The child had several warnings about making bad choices. • Yellow-The child had a conference with the teacher about making better choices. • Green-The child will bring a note home to his/her parents about the behaviors. • The child may also lose privileges. (Wisdom Walk)

  14. Homework • Your child will have occasional homework in Kindergarten. • Many times, it will be work they did not finish in class. Other times, it will be something else. (Homework Calendar) • We will write “Finish at Home” at the top to help you differentiate it from other papers. • Please return it the following day or on the indicated day.

  15. Assessments • GKIDS • Weekly Reports (Friday Assessment Folders) (PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE!) • Report Card (Most of the assessing for this is done in a one-on-one setting.) • Universal Speech Screening

  16. Grading • 4 - Complete Standard Mastery • (end of the year goal) • 3-Consistent Achievement toward Standard Mastery • 2-Moderate Achievement toward Standard Mastery • 1—Limited Achievement toward Standard Mastery • X- Not Assessed at this time • Report cards are sent home every nine weeks.

  17. Ice Cream • Kindergarten will have ice cream on Fridays during lunch beginning tomorrow. • For lunch boxers-send your child with 75 cents or have money in their account and we will let them have ice cream if they wish. If you do not wish for your child to have ice cream, let me know and send an email to Lisa Hasse at LHasse@forsyth.k12.ga.us • For lunch buyers-if your child wants ice cream, we will assume it is ok unless you send a note stating otherwise.

  19. Parent Conferences • 20 minutes each • Will discuss Report Card and any additional questions/concerns • A sign up sheet will come out closer to October 17th and 18th (Early Release Days)

Specials Areas Expectations: • Listen quietly and follow directions • Respect yourself and others • Use materials (equipment) correctly • Be kind and helpful (good sportsmanship) • Clean-up at the end of class Visit Brookwood’s Website for more information about the specials schedule and programs. There are index cards available to list questions you may have regarding Specials. The answers will be in the Bobcat Buzz on Friday.

  22. Specials Rotating Schedule Please pay special attention to what special your child will attend on each letter of the day. If your student has PE on the “C” day, notice how the “C” day is not always Wednesday. The day rotates because of early release and no school days. On early release days we will be having “Bobcat Den Days”. This could be used for school wide assemblies, team building activities or student performances. Student should wear gym shoes on Bobcat Den Days in case there is an active game.

  24. Age Appropriate Academic and Social Responsibilities You are provided with one of our communication tools “Age Appropriate Academic and Social Responsibilities”. The list was based on developmental readiness skills & the experience of our staff and focus committee. Please keep these in a safe place since we will be referring to them throughout the year. Please join our Learning Community as we build The Brookwood Bridge to Success!
