Series Introduction • Week 1 • What does the Bible claim about itself? • Week 2 • How do we know that the Bible IS the word of God? • Week 3 • How do I know my English Bible is reliable?

Let’s start with some words to know! • Revelation • Inspiration • Verbal and Plenary Inspiration • Illumination
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Revelation God reveling something to mankind that we could not know any other way.
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
Inspiration The act of God by which He insure that the revelation is communicated correctly.
2 Peter 1:20-21 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
Verbal Inspiration The understanding that each word of scripture is inspired.
Plenary Inspiration The understanding that the entirety of Scripture is inspired.
1 Corinthians 2:13-15 which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one.
Illumination The work of the Holy Spirit by which He makes clear the scriptural revelation to the believer. 1 Corinthians 2:13-14
The Einstein Illustration • Einstein dictates the theory of relativity to you (Revelation) • He then asks you to write it down (Inspiration) • He then tells you what words to use (Verbal Plenary Inspiration) • He then explains it to you so that you understand it (Illumination)
Inerrancy The doctrine that understands that the Bible is without error in its original form (the autographs)
To Sum Up: The Bible claims to be… • God’s revelation to mankind • Inspired by God word for word and in its entirety and therefore without error • The Holy Spirit helps the believer to understand the inspired words
So What? The Bible is the Word of God in such a way that whatever it says, God says. -Dr. B. B. Warfield
Questions? Ok, but I can write a book that claims to be the Word of God, but it isn’t really. Is there a way that I know the Bible is really the word of God besides what it says about itself?
