Introduction Session 3: Proving Ground Activities • SPoRT involvement with the NOAA Proving Ground (PG) activities offers a unique opportunity to expand SPoRT collaborations and help NOAA fulfill its objectives to demonstrate the utility of future operational satellite sensors. • NOAA asked SPoRT • help developing working paradigm for PG activities for GOES-R • use experience / expertise in satellite data and AWIPS to actively participate in demonstrating and transitioning demonstration products to end users • SPoRT vision “……… become a go to place within NASA for the transition of unique satellite data to the operational weather community….” .
GOES-R PG Activities (2009ff) • Major SPoRT activities for GOES-R PG • Work collaboratively with other NOAA PG partners (UW/CIMSS, CIRA, staff at SPC/HPC/OPC/NHC) and AWGs to demonstrate baseline and future products from ABI and GLM (started in 2009) • Develop and transition products to selected WFOs (7) and National Centers (4) and OCONUS sites (3 to date) • GLM level 2 and level 3 “proxy” products • ABI proxy imagery and level 2 products such as GOES-MODIS hybrid, convective initiation, RGB products • Additional focus on OCONUS applications – difference set of forecast issues • Conduct assessments and impact studies of potential utility of GOES-R products • Integrate products into AWIPS / AWIPS II demonstrating enhanced display capabilities for new products
Suomi NPP / VIIRS PG Activities • SPoRT involvement in transitioning NPP (VIIRS) data • NOAA/NESDIS support started Fall 2011 • NPP launched October 28, 2011, renamed Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) • Major activities • Demonstrate advanced capabilities from VIIRS over that of predecessor (AVHRR) and MODIS • Work with UAF/GINA, UW/CIMSS, and NRL/CIRA for real-time VIIRS data access and products (EDRs) and disseminate to end users • Better spatial resolution, wider swath, preserve resolution out to limb • DNB – low light level applications for clouds fog at night (combine to produce new RGB product) and possibly lightning • Transition additional EDRs from NESDIS to WFOs • Assessment and impact on forecast problems

Future PG Activities • Continue focus on niche areas – pGLM, hybrid, RGBs, AWIPS II • Short-term • GOES-MODIS-VIIRS hybrid • AWIPS II advanced display capabilities for lightning trends, enhanced RGB displays, 4D graphics • Longer-term (1-3 Years) • Develop a SPoRT “Center of Excellence” for RGB applications • AWIPS II developmental testbed for unique applications – collaborations with GSD (Boulder) and NWS “operations” testbed/PG in Kansas City • Demonstrate operational capabilties of other Suomi NPP instruments (e.g. CrIS, ATMS, OMPS) – drawing on AIRS/IASI experience • Use collaborations to expand opportunities in non-PG areas • CIRA connectivity to NHC through testbed activities – transition NASA / SPoRT products (SSTs, passive microwave products – in collaboration with NRL) • New funding opportunities
