Arthritis Defined… The term arthritis refers to an “inflammation of a joint”. It is used to refer to over 100 rheumatic diseases that are characterized by problems in and around joints.
Arthritis: A Nation in Pain • 46 Million in the US have doctor diagnosed Arthritis • 17.4 million adults experience activity limitations • More than half of the individuals who have arthritis are younger than 65 years old • Nearly 300,000 children (approx. 6,400 in Indiana) • Overall, women are affected more often than men • 2nd only to heart disease as a cause of work disability • Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in the US
Common Forms of Arthritis in the US • Osteoarthritis- 27 million • Rheumatoid Arthritis- 1.3 million • Gout- 3 million • Fibromyalgia- 5 million • Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis- 300,000
Osteoarthritis Usually begins after age 40 Affects only certain joints, often affects joints on ONE side of the body at first, rarely affects elbows or shoulders Usually doesn’t cause redness, warmth, swelling of a joint Affects the range of motion of the joint, pain/tenderness Photos courtesy of Health Hype 6
Rheumatoid Arthritis Usually begins between ages 25-50 Causes redness, warmth and swelling of joints Often causes a general feeling of sickness, fatigue, weight loss and fever Photoscourtesy of Health Hype 7

Arthritis Foundation Milestones • 1948 - A group of physicians established the Arthritis and Rheumatism Foundation • 1964– ARF reorganized and became the Arthritis Foundation • Today - Nation’s leading health organization addressing Americans affected by arthritis • 2008- The Power of 60! Celebrated 60 years of funding breakthroughs and changing lives. • Tomorrow – A world free of arthritis pain!
VISION 2010 • 46 Million Reasons Today- 67 Million Reasons Tomorrow! • Arthritis in the US is projected to increase by 46% from 46 million (1 in 5) today to 67 million (1 in 4) in 2030.
VISION 2010 • Shifting focus to improving health through wide-scale delivery of programs, organizing the “voice” of people with arthritis, and ensuring progress in arthritis research • Current strategic plan focuses on Healthy People 2010 goals: • Reduce arthritis pain • Reduce activity limitations due to arthritis • Reduce racial disparities in arthritis care • Promote visits to competent care providers
Advocacy Update • Build legislative support with other stakeholders for passage of the Arthritis Prevention Control and Cure Act (APCCA) • Intensify efforts to boost federal funding for arthritis research and public health programs • Strengthen Washington DC ‘footprint’ for the AF and arthritis as a major chronic disease • Join forces with leading VHAs calling for effective and affordable healthcare coverage for all Americans
Health Care Reform • Elimination of 24-Month Waiting Period • Pass legislation that will limit the monthly out-of-pocket costs patients face for their prescriptions • Affordable Health Choices Act 2009 • Drug manufacturers have agreed to provide as much as $80 billion worth of discounts for brand drugs
